TRUAX FIELD, Wis. — The Wisconsin Air National Guard’s 115th Fighter Wing received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (AFOUA) for exceptional service performed by the service members in the unit from 2015-2017. This is the 10th time that the 115th — which observed its 70th anniversary this year — has received the award.
“This prestigious award is a true testament of the success of the 115th Fighter Wing,” said Col. Erik Peterson, 115th Fighter Wing commander. “I have the privilege to serve with men and women everyday who sacrifice and work hard to ensure what we do is at an exceptional level. This level of dedication leads to awards like this and has made the 115th Fighter Wing a premiere unit in the Air National Guard and one of the best in the entire Air Force.”

The Secretary of the Air Force awards the AFOUA to military units — active duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve — that have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious service or outstanding achievement that clearly sets the unit above and apart from similar units. The 115th Fighter Wing was critiqued in categories related to mission operations, inspection results, community involvement, deployments and exercises.
In January, the unit will officially acknowledge the award during a base-wide ceremony. At the event, a 10th streamer will be placed on the unit flag, signifying the number of times the unit has received the award. In addition, 115th Fighter Wing members will receive a ribbon for the achievement that will be worn on their formal military uniform.
“This is a team award — every member of this unit, regardless of their career field, played a significant role in earning this award,” Peterson said. “Time and time again, we have demonstrated that we are excellent at what we do, we excel to meet any challenge and we continuously demonstrate this by our performance in our contingency and domestic operations. I could not be more proud.”
